Questions and Answers
How does Tape-Dolly work?
Tape-Dolly is a set of wheels that attaches and detaches to the tip of any standard retractable measuring tape. Once in place, Tape-Dolly enables the tape blade to be pushed out without jamming on obstacles that would cause the tape to buckle and fold. The rolling action of the wheels carries the tape tip over the obstacles. In this manner measurements can be taken, by the user, from a stationary position. One person can stand in a room and measure in all directions or on a ladder and measure a roof slope.
Does Tape-Dolly require a special measuring tape?
No. Tape-Dolly can be used with any standard retractable measuring tape. It has an integral slot and clamp assembly which holds it securely to the tape tip. It attaches and detaches easily.
The stiffness of the tape does effect performance. Stiffer tapes, of course, perform better where as they resist buckling for longer distances. Stiffness is usually determined by the width of the tape, 1 1/4" tapes offer the most stiffness. Tape-Dolly has been tested to 30' with a 1" width tape on 12/12 slope roof.
Doesn't the weight of the Tape-Dolly limit the the distance that can be measured?
Tape-Dolly is constructed of heavy gage aluminum. The wheels are hollow rubber. Tape-Dolly is engineered for light weight durability. It is light enough to cover normal roof slopes, yet heavy enough to hold the tape in a normal wind condition.
Can you really measure roof slopes from the ground?
Yes. Some eave heights are reachable with the tape measure and Tape-Dolly attached. The user has to be able to see the measure markings on the tape at the eave from the ground. By fixing your sight on the marking and following it during a slow retrieval you can read the measurement when the mark comes into readable range. Most measurements for estimating purposes only require accuracy to within a couple of inches.
What about using Tape-Dolly from a ladder?
Roof slope measurements can be taken easily from a ladder. Standing on the ladder, at the eave, the user simply pushes the tape up the slope. Tape-Dolly carries the tape tip over shingle butts, curled shingles, etc.. When the wheels reach the ridge the user looks down and reads the measurement at the roof edge.
How does Tape-Dolly make the job safer?
Because the user can remain in one place and push
the tape blade out over obstacles, he or she can always be in a secure place. It
eliminates the need to climb dangerous roof slopes; walk on unsound floors or
decks; or to crawl out on narrow beams or ledges.
Is Tape-Dolly only useful for measuring
roofs?
No. Tape-Dolly is useful for any
measuring situation where a tape blade can be fed out to obtain an accurate
measurement. Flooring, landscaping, masonry, fencing, paving, excavating and all
activities where measurements are taken can use a Tape-Dolly.
