As a roofing contractor I encounter many different types of measuring
situations. The most frustrating are those where it is impossible to climb
and impossible to slide a tape up the roof slope. In these instances I would
usually count shingle tabs, guess at distances, or worse, climb dangerous
slopes with cracking and crumbling shingles. I would always overcompensate on
unmeasured take-offs and usually submit bids high enough to lose the job.
One day, as I was struggling to force a tape up a deteriorated cedar roof, I
was wishing that my tape tip had wheels on it. And with that I proceeded to
rig some small wheels onto a tape tip. On the next job I tried it. It worked
and I thought I had myself a nice little toy. But, as time passed, I found
that I actually had an indispensable tool.
My job became easier
because on many one story buildings I could measure the slope without taking
a ladder off my truck.
My job was done faster because the tape tip
rolled up the slope first time, every time.

accurate because almost every roof was measurable.
